In the Spain of the fifteenth century, the troubadour Manrico, brother of the Count de Luna, was abducted as a child by the gypsy Azucena, whose mother had been tortured on the order of the old Count de Luna. Years later, the Count and Manrico have become political rivals and are both in love with Leonora.
