Anne Boleyn is the first of the three queens of England that Donizetti took an interest in, before Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I. The tragic fate of this historic character, accused of adultery, treason and sentenced to death, gave the composer the opportunity to express the full measure of his lyrical dramatic talent and turned him into one of the most important musicians of his time.
