The libretto Ballo in maschera, at first rejected by the censorship for presenting a regicide fell into favour with the Italian nationalist movement at the time, which, when painting the walls with the innocent graffiti « Viva Verdi », was actually thinking « Viva Vittorio Emanuele Re D’Italia ».
