Farnace, the son of King Mitridate and husband of Tamiri is defeated by his enemy Pompeo and thrown out of Heraclea, capital of the Kindom of Pont. Tamiri begs him in vain to give up his intentions of revenge. Farnace, however, orders her to sacrifice their son and commit suicide herself before she falls into the hands of the enemy...

Vivaldi wrote this Farnace for his Venetian theatre of Sant’Angelo, where it was well received and often revived, before slipping into obscurity until Savall’s recordings of recent years. Anna Giró, singer and rumoured favourite of the Red Priest, distinguished herself in the role of Tamiri, Farnace, the King of Pont’s wife, who is ordered by her husband to kill their son at the beginning of the opera, then to commit suicide to escape Pompei’s troops. She won’t, of course, or the audience would be deprived of the vocal and instrumental pyrotechnics of the incredible «Sorge l’irato nembo» and other wonderful moments…
