Created in an incredibly hurried bout of composition, it also had to compete with the enduring popularity among audiences at the time of Paisiello’s Barbiere di Siviglia and live down a number of onstage incidents. Rossini played with the conventions of the opera of his era in this commedia, which met with undeniable success on the second night.
