THE LITTLE MAGIC FLUTE

Based on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Participatory opera for young audiences
based on The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Season 2025-26
Duration: 1h30
No intermission
6

The Queen of the Night and her dizzying vocal gymnastics,

Papageno and Papagena with their feathers, the trials Prince Tamino must endure to save the beautiful Pamina from the mysterious Sarastro… Here, Mozart’s most famous opera is transposed into a participatory opera for young audiences! The Magic Flute becomes The Little Magic Flute, a shorter version adapted in French of this supreme masterpiece first staged in Vienna back in 1791.

Julie Depardieu has devised this show to introduce children to opera and its codes by actively involving them in the performance. From their seats, they will join the artists in singing certain arias of which the words will be screened karaoke-style! Beforehand, the audience singers will have been prepared and familiarized with the music and singing of the selected excerpts. This preparation time, followed by the magic of the performance, will provide unique moments for both the children and their families. Come and experience the enchantment of an initiatory tale through a vibrant show!

The vocal line-up composed of youthful talents will be mainly drawn from the Lausanne University of Music (HEMU), as will the orchestra to be conducted by Simon Proust.

PRESS | Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, February 2024

“Throughout the show, the children participate enthusiastically and attentively, sometimes even unexpectedly, before reserving their cheers and applause for the performers, who dance on stage until the curtain falls. The children’s verdict is unanimous: thumbs up and cries of “That was great!””
Ôlyrix, February 8, 2024
“Seeing children fill the auditorium and sing opera at the top of their voices for an hour and a half is nothing short of a miracle. You have to see it to believe it, but above all, you have to experience this extraordinary event to understand that the future of opera may well be playing out here and now.”
Forum Opéra, February 1, 2024
“It was as convivial as it was sublime (…) As the children asked questions, even the most seasoned opera-goers revisited this fully participatory flute.”
Cult News, February 5, 2024
“A unique, multi-faceted set, beautiful costumes, effective direction of the actors, and you are swept up in Tamino’s quest for his Pamina, ready to follow the uncompromising coming-of-age tale unfolding before your eyes, as if you had fallen back into childhood. As an introduction to opera, it is a resounding success.”
Première Loge, February 5, 2024
